Best Time to Visit the Bridge

The fog, and how it behaves

People arrive in July expecting California and get a grey wall. That is normal. The fog comes in through the strait overnight, sits on the deck through breakfast, and burns back late morning or early afternoon. Some days it never lifts; some days it hangs at tower height and the tops stand clear above it, which is a better photograph than a blue sky. If you have one morning in summer, walk the bridge in the fog and come back to Crissy Field after lunch for the clear version.

September and October

These are the months I would pick for a first visit. The fog machine slows down, the afternoons are warm and the light stays good into the evening. The sidewalk is on summer hours until early November, so a 7:00 pm walk is still possible. Winter can be clear too, between the rain fronts, but the deck closes at 6:30 pm and the wind has an edge.

Morning or evening

Morning gives you the emptiest sidewalk and the best chance of a parking space at the Welcome Center. Evening gives you the light on the towers and the city coming on behind you as you walk back. The catch is the sunset itself: the west sidewalk, the ocean side, is for cyclists and closed to walkers. Sunset walkers watch from the east sidewalk, looking through the traffic, or from Crissy Field and Battery Spencer, which face the right way. The viewpoints page has both.

Weekdays and weekends

Weekends bring coaches to Vista Point and cyclists to both sidewalks. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are as quiet as the bridge gets. If your dates are fixed on a Saturday, start at 7:00 am and you will still have an hour of calm. The walking page has the hours in full.

Timing the boats and the bikes

The bay cruise runs several departures a day, and the 5:30 pm sailing has a happy hour aboard; on a clear September evening that is the one to book. The bike tours leave in the morning, which puts you on the deck before the afternoon wind builds.
